Signature Capture

On tablet PC's with Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition operating system installed, the ability to use the screen for handwriting input is available. WhisperReporter supports handwriting recognition for inputting data on these tablet PC's, plus it includes the ability to capture handwriting directly without attempting to convert it to text. This is useful when you might need to input signatures into the report.

To input a signature into WhisperReporter, first check to see if signature support exists. If it does, you will see an Insert Signature button on the editor toolbar; if the PC does not have the Windows XP Tablet Edition operating system installed, this button will not be visible.

Next, position the text cursor where you want the signature to be inserted and click on the Insert Signature button mentioned above. This will invoke the Signature Capture dialog:

The initial Ink Color is set to Navy blue, but you can pick another color from the pull down list which will also be saved for future signatures. Once a color is decided on, simply write your signature on the space provided and click the Accept button. Use the Clear button to clear the signature and try again should you not like the way it came out, or click Cancel to cancel the signature capture all together.

One note about security of a digital signature: WhisperReporter normally only inserts a link to a standalone image file on disk for images used in a report (the actual image remains as a separate file in WhisperReporter's database structure on disk). However, even though a signature is captured as an image, it is not saved to a separate standalone file but rather the image is embedded directly into the comment. This can help deter unauthorized distribution of a signature since it is not a standalone file that can be easily copied to another system or removable device.
