Report Number

When WhisperReporter creates a new report, the report number can either be manually entered or automatically generated using a user configured set of rules. These rules can be customized by modifying the Report Number Format preference entry as described below.

Select from the available tags list on the left side and either double-click the item in the list, or select it and click the Add button to add the item to the report number format. Likewise, you can select from the Tags Used list on the right side, and either double-click the item or select it and click the Remove button to remove one of the tags from the report format. You can also move items up and down to change the order of the tag in the report number format.

If you use one of the incrementing digit tags, you can also select the rule by which it will increment:
·Zero - It will assume the last report number used was 0, and will increment to the next available number that would not result in a duplicate report number. If the date was also used in the format, you can expect the incrementing digits to begin with 1 each day.
·Last increment number used - will always increment to the next number that will not result in a duplicate report number. This option would prevent the incrementing number from starting back at 1 each day even if the date was used in the format.
·Other - Use this to restart the increment value at a particular number. This is similar to the Zero option except that instead of incrementing starting with 0, it will increment starting at the number specified. As with the Zero option, if the date is used in the format, the numbering will increment starting with this number each day.
Hint: if you want to number your reports starting from 100001 and up from now on, first use Other and set it at 100001. Create one report, and then set the option to Last increment number used.

The Format box shows the current format in a string form, and the Sample report number provides a sample of how the report number would look resolved with actual information.

Note: Duplicate report numbers are possible, so consider using one of the Incrementing Digit tags so that if a duplicate report number is generated, the incrementing digit tag will increment to the next available number to prevent it from being a duplicate.
